Biography

Je Baak is a South Korean contemporary artist known for his multimedia works that explore themes of reality, perception, and spirituality. Working across video, photography, and installation, Baak often engages with Eastern philosophy and Buddhist concepts, juxtaposing them with Western art history and digital media. His work questions the nature of existence, encouraging viewers to reflect on their understanding of reality and their place within it. By merging traditional spiritual ideas with modern technology, Baak creates a dialogue between the past and the present, the material and the immaterial. One of the central elements in Baak’s practice is his ability to deconstruct and reframe everyday experiences, transforming them into meditative explorations of time and space. His video installations, in particular, often manipulate time, either slowing it down or creating loops that alter the viewer's perception of the mundane. This technique allows Baak to emphasize the transient nature of reality, drawing parallels to the Buddhist concept of impermanence.Baak’s work frequently draws on minimalism and simplicity, often using light, reflection, and repetitive patterns to create immersive environments. His installations invite contemplation, encouraging viewers to consider deeper philosophical questions about existence, consciousness, and the nature of reality. Through his unique blend of philosophical inquiry and visual art, Baak challenges conventional modes of seeing and understanding.Je Baak’s art has been exhibited internationally, including at notable institutions like the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, and various international biennials. His work continues to engage audiences with its thoughtful fusion of technology, spirituality, and art, offering a meditative space to reflect on the deeper aspects of human experience.
