Biography

Rachel Rose is an American artist, born in 1986, known for her innovative use of video and multimedia installations that examine themes of perception, history, and the fragility of life. Her work often combines footage from various sources—both found and original—blurring the lines between different times, places, and realities. Through this, she creates immersive environments that engage viewers in considering the boundaries of human experience, often focusing on mortality, the natural world, and technology. Rose first gained widespread attention with her 2015 solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, where she presented Everything and More, a video work that juxtaposed footage of space exploration with personal, abstract imagery. This piece highlighted her unique ability to blend scientific and personal narratives, questioning how we perceive vast concepts like the universe and our place within it. Her interest in sensory experience and emotional response is central to her work, often exploring how both human and non-human life interact with the environments around them. In her piece Wil-o-Wisp (2018), Rose explored the historical and spiritual connections between humans and the landscape, setting the story in 16th-century agrarian England. By merging historical narratives with fictional storytelling, Rose invited viewers to consider the intersection of history, mysticism, and our contemporary relationship with the natural world. This blend of the factual and the imaginary is a hallmark of her work, creating a rich, multi-layered experience that feels both intimate and expansive. Rose has exhibited her work at major institutions globally, including the Serpentine Galleries in London, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City. Her ability to fuse complex philosophical themes with visually captivating environments has made her a prominent figure in contemporary art, known for pushing the boundaries of video art and installation. Through her immersive works, Rose continues to challenge how we perceive time, space, and our own existence within these frameworks.
