Richard Mosse is an Irish artist and photographer renowned for his provocative use of film and photography to explore the complexities of conflict and human suffering, particularly in war-torn regions. Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1980, Mosse studied at the Dublin Institute of Technology and later received an MFA from the Royal College of Art in London. His artistic practice often challenges conventional representations of war and violence, utilizing innovative techniques and materials to create striking visual narratives that compel viewers to confront the realities of conflict.Mosse gained significant international recognition with his project The Enclave, which documents the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Using infrared film, he captures lush landscapes and the harsh realities of war in vivid colors, creating a dissonance that highlights the brutality of the human experience in such environments. This project was awarded the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2014 and exhibited widely, including at the Venice Biennale, where it received critical acclaim for its unique perspective on war photography.In subsequent works, Mosse has continued to experiment with different media and formats, including video installations such as Incoming, which utilizes military-grade surveillance technology to document the refugee crisis.
